Alaska inspires a lot of tall tales. But reality is just as incredible. Want the real truth about a meeting in Anchorage?
Because Anchorage sits on the coast of Southcentral Alaska and is protected by the Chugach Mountain Range, the city maintains a temperate, maritime climate. Alaska is a huge state, covering a landmass equal to about one-fifth of the contiguous United States. When stories of Alaska’s weather extremes are published, the area affected could be up to 900 miles away from Anchorage. Anchorage’s winter temperatures average 20°F. Add low humidity to the equation and temperatures feel even warmer. Even on the shortest days of winter, Anchorage gets seven and a half hours of functional daylight. Those short days don’t last long; even by February, Anchorage experiences more daylight than many cities in the Lower 48 states. On the longest days of summer, temperatures can reach the high 70s, and Anchorage gets 22 hours of functional daylight, so there’s plenty of time to enjoy all that Anchorage has to offer.
Dog mushing may be the state sport, but that doesn’t mean you’ll use a sled to get here. Last year, Anchorage’s international airport served more than 5 million passengers. More than 50 carriers use the airport, including 29 domestic and 18 international airlines. Direct and nonstop flights are available from many U.S. cities.
Anchorage is very cost effective. In a price comparison survey among several cities, Anchorage had the lowest prices for many items associated with meetings, including breakfast service, a cheese tray for 50 attendees, coffee, trade show and audio/visual set up. Anchorage not only has lower prices on many services, since there is no sales tax in Anchorage, meeting planners can save even more.
